Were they on same age tires? That was so easy. =D>
After I saw this video is clear that Honda bring a good updated to Canada, not only the TR have the capacity to pass other cars in the straight but also because you can see that after Pierre pass Magnussen and only intermediately before he start to braking (or in the braking) the rear light started to blink, when last year that light start to blink like 300 or 400 meters before the curve.

Gasly:
"I put pressure on everybody, Franz Tost, Jonathan Eddolls, Toyohary Tanabe ... All of us, I said that I wanted to build the new engine because I did not have a complicated race, I preferred to be penalized here, we had more chances to finish in the points and better because in France we did not start from behind ."

"I forced them to change the engine, even if they penalized me." I started nineteenth and recovered eight positions. With the other engine he had gone sixteenth and had a very difficult race ahead."

They didn’t have enough time to figure out if that would solve the problem or if it would be worth the penalty. The mechanics need al the time between FP3 and Q to swap an engine.

Maybe because the issue wasn't clear at that time. And the with more time detected that was nothing to do with the ICE and only some sort of upgraded MGU-H

..... Toro Rosso did media presentations but always said that Honda will meet Renault engine mid season.
That's what Honda has been saying for the last three years, that they will catch Renault by mid-season and leapfrog them by the end of the season. Hard facts tell us Toro Rosso is the only team that went backwards compared to last year.
There you go. Before mid season. 8)

STR is currently 7th in the constructors. They've finished 7th every year since 2014. The best finish in the constructors they've had is 6th, and that was in 2008 when Vettel gave them their only victory to date.

They've already equaled Sainz's best finish of 4th in Singapore last year.

Comparing 2018 qualy results with 2017, TR is +0.1s, while everyone else improved to a smaller or greater extent.
Sauber is -1.9s compared to 2017.
McLaren is -1.8s compared to 2017.

The way I see it, is that Honda has improved, but the others haven't sat still and the time sheets reflect that.
Toro Rosso on the other hand have a lot of home work to do. As much as I like Hartley and Gasly and believe in their potential, right now they are not the pair TR needed for the development work that's ahead.
I'm not sure if staffing and resourcing is adequate either, for TR to become a podium contender in the next few years.
You're clearly mistaking Toro Rosso for Williams, the only team to go backwards.

MMMMMMMMM is obviously smoking something.

2017 fastest = Kyvat at 1:13.690
2018 fastest = Hartley at 1:12.635

That is over a 1 second improvement and had gasly not qualified on his old engine it might have been even faster.
Sauber had a significant amount of time to make up but even then leclerc is clearly faster then ericsson. Ericsson was slower in 2018 then in 2017 but leclerc was nearly 1.6 seconds faster in Q1 then him which shows what a difference a good driver can make.

Mclaren is a 1:13.693 vs 1:12.856 in comparison of 2017 to 18. That is only a 0.8 tenths improvement.
Red Bull is a 1:12.4 vs 1:10.937 which means max would have qualified ahead of Fernando with his slower 2017 car in 2018.

Please don't forget that Toro Rosso has two rookies that are driving for the first time on most of the tracks. Just saying.

Some of it is down to the tires. Hypersoft being a bit faster than last year's ultra soft. The tires being worth the better part of a second. In other words the improvement over last year is smaller than you think. The new Honda engine is guaranteed .3 seconds faster than last year's Renault.
