Mercedes AMG F1 W09 EQ Power+

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The cars aren't built to a specific driver. The suspension can be tuned as can downforce balance but that's it really. Bottas's car coupd be set up for him just Hamilton's cam be for him.

Likely is that Hamilton has just learnt to look after his tyres. Part of being a top driver is being able to adjust to changes whilst maintaining pace.

Why would they do that considering both cars do not need to be exactly the same?
Because when you set up a car at the track you don't have unlimited adjustability. at some point a design change is required, and that change might help one driver while hindering the other.

here is the live timing screenshot
From Mark Hughes:

"By contrast, Mercedes arrived here on the crest of a wave and its calm confidence shone through. The W09 was flying down the straights in Friday morning practice, with a speed trap speed before 130R of 312kph, more than 10kph faster than the Ferrari. Some new development, as yet secret, was responsible for that enormous margin. Thereafter either it wasn’t used or its advantage was converted into a few degrees more rear wing flap angle – and for the rest of the weekend it was no faster at the end of the straights than the Ferrari at about 305kph."

Of course. However, there isn't much reason not to let Bottas run the older parts that, apparently, worked better for him.

Mercedes (like all cars) are best when in free air, so being the leading car probably helps tyre life a lot. Though I think Mercedes seem to suffer the most when being behind other cars (as previous seasons).

Yes, but now you are getting into the issue of old parts not being optimized to work with the new ones, and you get a knock on effect the more out of sync you are with the latest round of parts.

I believe it was in the post Singapore interview with C4 that Toto explained where they had unlocked more potential from the car. IIRC it was a specific corner at Spa that caused them concern and when they looked at these data it suggested they alter the setup of the car. They did so in Monza but it was Singapore that really benefitted from the new way of running the car.

It was all necessarily vague but to me sounded like a suspension change that made the tyre operating window wider and suddenly they're able to deliver more performance through the tyres.

If anyone can find that interview online or has it recorded on their DVR it might be worth checking out.

The investigation has concluded that Mercedes' design has different intentions to the 2012 Red Bull system

Ha, that app isn't any better!

the app is great, Juzh posts telemetry from it. check italian gp thread for videos of the app
There is a huge difference between posting screenshots of the timing pages which match the official timing reports versus the "real time" map that is often wrong and glitchy as hell.
Yes, the car position on the track map is wrong but numbers are correct. So just before the 130r this is what it looked like:

ham pole lap
rai q3 lap

Guess this is the relevant forum since the vid talks about sensors and stuff on and about the car. Really informative.

In short Redbull used it as a aero device and Merc is not using it as a aero device.
