Mercedes AMG F1 W09 EQ Power+

The FIA didnt “decide” anything. They gave an opinion. Nothing more. If there is a post race protest, it’s the stewarts that male the verdict, not the FIA.
Yes but a stewards decision and be contested and then it goes to the FIA if memory serves!

please ignore the quality of the drawing

am i mistaken to think that the area between the wheel hub (green) and the rim would be sealed by the nut and the hub (pic 1 and 2 in red) if it wasn't for the holes?

or do the holes marked with yellow go somewhere? those appear to be in the nuts

could it be that the holes (pink in pic 1) are connected to the other holes inside the rim (in pink) ?

The holes inside the hub area look to pass through into the cavity in the spokes. Take a look at the tweet i posted above.

oh yea that's in the pic ... lol
Image

red is that connection ... the holes marked green have to have some purpose ... could they potentially connect to the other ones inside the rim ...meaning that the rim would be partially hollow

Good listen from Scarbs about these rims.

The pink holes in pic 1 (top left) are the drive holes - the pegs in the face of the wheel engage in those to transmit torque to the wheel.

Why i disagree with scarbs is blowing hot air through the wheels cannot keep heat away from them. You are actually putting heat into them. What he is saying would make sense if the wheels were already hot, and fresh cool air is being blown in to drive away that heat.
Cooling of the wheel is better done by having a brake duct that simply diverts air into the rim annuls.

Mercedes given the all-clear to run the wheels as designed.

Some people are going to be really unhappy about this!

The stewards decision focuses nearly entirely on the holes in the spacer and not the holes in the wheel. I think that they're creating a low pressure area inside the wheel hub via the rotation of the holes that pass through the spokes.
This in turn draws air through the small holes in the spacer, which gets its air from the drive lug holes. I'd be willing to bet if we saw behind that spacer we'd see a number of holes there divisible by the number of spokes.

Seems like a reasonable decision to me, any aero benefits would have to extremely tiny I'd have thought.

We need to see the rear wheel hubs...
I dont see where the air comes from to go into the middle of the rim... The outer discharge point looks to shoot air tangentially. . Not sure if into the spokes or the barrel of the wheel... Need a side view.

Any more ideas?

Looks like a different material lines inside the wheel where the holes are. For insulation purposes of course. This thing is designed to prevent heat transfer to the centre part of the wheel.

The air comes from the 24 circumferential holes on the hub.

EDIT:
Is it possible that part of the hub (the part with the 24 circumferential holes) can move inwards and outwards, either when the wheel is attached to the hub, thus revealing and locating the thermal management holes or while the wheel or while the wheel is attached based on temperature? (I don't know if the regs would allow this however.
Those holes are on every car wheel and are pretty much blocked off by the flange of the wheel when mounted though.

In mercedes case u could be right hoewever. These are even more holes on top of the ones inside the cavity.

The smake perforated holes on the plate are restrictors.. Or else it would be full open bore..

So, everyone will run such systems in the near future. Going to be fun next year when 30% of the solutions are then declared illegal because they could have aero importance.
