Ferrari Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Well, you would make the main plane steeper to work with the shorter secondary...

A smaller main plane and larger secondary than most currently run is better efficiency-wise normally, but vice-versa works better for shedding drag when the DRS is activated. Ferrari evidently went for better DRS effect and straightline speed whereas Merc, expecting to be at the front without DRS anyway, lean the other way.

All Ferrari-powered cars were very quick when qualifying on straights in China . But not really in the race.

Interesting to see that Ferrari's advantage on the long straight only really shows as soon as the DRS activates. Also it looks like Merc's MGU-K cuts off sooner.
The most interesting thing is that the Ferrari is travelling faster for most of the track distance, yet the Mercedes has the quicker lap time. If you look at all the low speed corners, the Mercedes is travelling faster (more low-speed DF or more mechanical grip). Clearly travelling 10 km/hr faster at 300+ is less valuable than travelling 5 or 6 km/hr faster at less than 100.

travelling x seconds at +10km/h is always better than travelling x seconds at +6km/h. Regardless of which speed you are.

I think the delta in the corners (considering the exit as well
) is higher than the one in the straights.

Its not the speed at which you are 10km/h faster.
Its the time. ;)

FerrAri could be 10km/h faster than the others for a while on that long straight

Which is why I said

The plot shown is velocity vs track distance. If the plot was velocity vs time, the true value of extra velocity on the straights vs corners would be apparent.

The plot doesn't differentiate corners, exits, straights etc - it simply shows the total distance for which one car is faster than the other. The Mercedes is faster for a very short distance only, but due to the low speeds, this is a relatively long time.

6kph is a higher percentage of 90kph than 10kph is of 300kph.

On the former you lose ~7% per arbitrary time unit, in the other you lose 3%.

Bottas was .3% faster than Vettel.

Sure but I made the comment to illustrate how the view on a speed-distance graph can be misleading.

Bad news regardless how one tries to spin it.

Why bad? They know RBR is planning on taking a penalty later already, so try to get a jump on Merc, and if it fails, you can still stay ahead of RBR with offsetting penalties.

The goal is to beat Mercedes, not stay ahead of RBR. Not to mention they already beat the new Honda power unit in Baku.

By introducing spec 2 so early, they have to do one or more of the following, that all come with potential negative consequences.
  1. run spec 1 on Friday, and spec 2 on Saturday and Sunday. This can "extend" spec 2's life, but you run the risk of someone screwing up the swap. A Hydraulic leak, being a common issue.
  2. stretch spec to 2 last more than 7 race weekends, either by turning it down, or running a higher risk of failure.
  3. Also move up the spec 3 introduction and take a penalty for a 4th.
The other thing worth noting, is that they have limited their ability for future updates this season without taking a penalty.

I believe teams do FP to Q swaps already. But yeah is complicated for the crew etc. Indeed it is very early in the season as it is normal procedure. I guess Ferrari had issues with 1st batch of PUs this season. Hence the reason why they speed up spec2. I think they figure it out that spec1 cannot reliably run on max settings. Or at least they saw bigger gain on long run with early spec2. And they can run spec 1 in less power depended circuits. Or on FP on couple of races.
