Statement: Incident during FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race, Spa Francorchamps

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) regrets to advise that a serious incident involving cars #12, #19 and #20 occurred at 17:07 on 31/08/19 as a part of the FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps, round 17 of the season.

The scene was immediately attended by emergency and medical crews, and all drivers were taken to the medical centre.

As a result of the incident, the FIA regrets to inform that the driver of car #19, Anthoine Hubert (FRA), succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at 18:35.

The driver of car #12, Juan-Manuel Correa (USA), is in a stable condition and is being treated at the CHU Liège hospital. More information on his condition will be provided when it becomes available.

The driver of car #20 Giuliano Alesi (FRA) was checked and declared fit at the medical centre.

The FIA is providing support to the event organisers and the relevant authorities, and has commenced an investigation into the incident.
The FIA site redirects to Facebook and delivers the worst possible news.

Correa in stable condition is at least some good news, but damn man, the kid was 22. The second I saw the crash it just looked, sickening.

Dear members,

please don't post images and/or videos of the incident right now. We'll allow that in a few days for analyzing and suggesting how to make things better. But now footage of that would be very inappropiate. Please have respect for Anthoine and his family. Let us be sensible.

Wow. Yes very sad topic to deal with in this thread. FIA needs to look into all round safety on the open wheeler, but 100% safety is never possibly.
For the race, i think Leclerc has said he will be working on his race pace, so i am not too worried about himlosing the lead. His first stint needs to be fast enough to put him at least 10 seconds ahead of Vettel. From there he should be able to manage. Leave vettel to fight lewis.
For Sure!!

In my opinion P2 on SPA is slightly better than P1. We saw it last year - Vettel took slipstream just at the end of ear rouge and overtook Ham with ease. He can do it tomorrow as well - being second one at the beginning of kemmel straight is like advantage not disadvantage...

What can Lewis do to Vettel from P-3 then?
I think Ferrari will give instructions that first through eau rouge keeps p1 until the threat from behind is managed.
They can easily crash out like Nico and Lewis did a few years ago. Right now they need a win more than anything else.

Seb hasn't won in over a year and Charles is chasing his first ever win after coming close twice this year, they wont be holding back, cant wait for the battle to commence and with Lewis in the mix makes it ever better.

If the race pace from practice holds then imo the only real way Ferrari can win in a normal race without lucky pitstops from safety cars, etc, is if they end up 1-2 end of first lap and one of them can back off the pack, create a gap.

If they have a significant tire life issue they either have to go longer/slower to make the second stint work while Ham/Verstappen stop early, go faster, and come out ahead but without Ferrari being able to match them despite newer tires. More likely I feel is Ferrari stop first and Ham and Verstappen stay out longer, maybe significantly so and don't really worry about the Ferrari's eating into their pitstop window, but when they pit have a large enough tire/pace advantage together to be able to pass them on track.

If one of the Ferrari's can slow the others up while on the same tires and they can hold their own on the straights then maybe they open up some options.

vettel vs hamilton q3 laps. Total garbage lap by vettel, but got saved by the engine :!:

yup.. Still 10km/h+ difference in med-slow speed corners..They will get slaughtered in Singapore
Ferrari not only has engine power, the car is a low-drag design, plus they're running lesser wing. Explains the big advantage on straights. Merc running higher wing, giving more cornering speed.

Can Ferrari orchestrate their two cars? I don't see it, with those two. Seb is a bit slower but he can make his tyres last better than Charles, so they might close up around the pitstop window and then yes as you say Lewis will be trying to overcut them, but getting both will be difficult. it could be a great race.
