Red Bull RB16

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Nobody?
It's a unique set up, the rack is midway between the top and bottom wishbones, but placed rearwards, nearer the front axle line than the front bulkhead. The track rod then reaches backwards to pivot on the upright behind the front axle line. It even passes behind the pushrod.
Easier to create an Ackerman setup, to turn the inner wheel and lower its ride height via the POU geometry
Hmmm. Don’t quite grasp it. I have seen Williams is the only team still putting a steering rod in mid airflow, which seems less efficient to me. I thougt all other teams place the rod in front of the lower or higer wishbone, and integrade the teardrop shape as both rods being one teardrop shape. But with the RB16 I can’t see any separate steering piece. I hope my English is suffient to get what I mean.
Might help to understand pro vs anti Ackerman steering.

Explained more deeply and with images on twitter here.

Could be to maximise the blowing in the wheels. Brake ducts can be even better flowing now that they don't have to dodge the tie rod.

What about the obvious negative caster up front?

Hi all.

Thanks. I know the ackerman principle. I still cannot see the track rod itself though.
But just suppose it weren't hypothetical.

Or, with the steering rack further back, this is the primary and the got the brake stuff all inboard. I hope their main brake bleeder mechanic has small hands 😂

It should. It has a lot more downforce than last year. So much so that I'm worried about speed traps.

TBH when we were onboard with max like 10 minutes ago the car seemed a bit loose on the rear. It turned well enough but rear wasn't having it. Verstappen was doing corrections all the time. He was on some sort of long run on hard tires though, which might not be firing up in the cold. Not sure what to think.

That looks like a medium downforce rear wing.
