The wheel base is needed for high speed stability.

Really?
How many races has he thrown his team under the bus? Could you list them? When has he done that at a slightest problem??

It looks like after fp3 the team over ride his decision and made changes to the car which left his car in very bad condition compared to Thursday.

Hamilton admitted that the team had failed to build on an encouraging practice day on Thursday, as changes to the set-up had sent it in completely the wrong direction when track action resumed on Saturday.

"There were lots of changes that we did in the car after FP3, because FP3 was a disaster," he said.

"And that's from the work that we've done in the last couple of days. It was completely the wrong direction, completely missed the ball.

"We then made some changes to try and take steps backwards and move the car to a different place, and the car was worse than ever. So I think we really lost our way from Thursday."

So looks like the team effed up his setup and also his race with poor strategy...so any normal human being is allowed to he critical.

Every team and driver does the same.
It is the seven time world champions job to tell the team what to change and what stays.
Why do u think he was so pissed about it... As far as I can understand, they went against his advice and changed it and it was even worse for him. That's why he was wanted to talk to his team after the race.
And during the race the team again did a bad job with strategy and made his lose 3 places.
It's a legitimate issue to be mad about.
The way you described this, it looks like he piggybacked all his 7 titles with the team actually setting him the car without his opinion.... in the end of the day he himself underdelivered.
And where did I ever give u that impression? Please don't put ur opinion as others.
They must have sabotagers in the team then...since they were even willing to change the colour scheme last year, and now they are changing his car setup without his permision... Valterri is getting pranked even harder.
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

Talking of car sizes, It's crazy how the current F1 cars are wider than a Range Rover, and close to 1 metre longer than a Range Rover!!! This is insane!
totally ridiculous, the wheelbase of the merc car is just 20 or so cm shy of the newer medium sized commercial trucks we use here, and the same wheelbase of the older trucks.

mind blown when I saw this. the width isnโ€™t the problem

Lewis thought he got screwed. Valterri thought he got unscrewed.

Well, Mercedes has made a lot of strategy screwups over the years at Monaco. I'm pretty sure most drivers would feel the their team screwed them if they got overcut by multiple drivers.

Mercedes seems to always think the undercut will work in Monaco, even though it hasn't in several years. For a while now it's been about saving your tires on the first stint, and then pushing as hard as you can for as long as you can when released into free air. That's exactly how Perez went from 8th to 4th.

Yes. It was just a screwed, unscrewed joke.

On a serious note, I really donโ€™t think Alpha Tauri would have pulled Gasly in before Lewis.

That was Hamilton's main gripe, wasn't it? They were telling him to save his tyres in the first stint and then brought him in first anyway. It's something that probably doesn't make sense from inside the car in the heat of the moment.

They are historically very poor with strategy at Monaco and have got away with a couple in the past. But to be fair this time they could have been playing against a loaded deck. I do wonder if the RBR guys had an informal chat with the AT guys on Saturday night and gave them the ever so gentle suggestion that if Hamilton was immediately behind Gasly in the race that they might not want to pit Gasly until precisely one lap after Hamilton pitted, no matter what?

All completely fair of course. Just very clever.

So is there any evidence for the claims in here that the team went against Hamilton's will/advice with the setup?

Afaik they made some major changes to Bottas' car before qualy, which seems to have worked well for him. Would be interesting to hear what changes they made to each car.

Well Toto said after qualifying that Hamilton wanted to prepare the tires in a certain way and the team overruled him. Still unclear (at the time) whether Hamilton's way would have helped or not but the team's approach did not work clearly

Potential, cheap, Monaco GP saver: Just for this race, 3 mandatory pit stops, plus use all three compounds.
Add some joker loops though the harbour.

Or maybe completely remove aero from the cars so they can overtake.
I started a thread about the merits of making F1 into 1000hp Formula Fords in the technical section. :)

Formula Ford's regulations to prohibit aerofoils and downforce-generating surfaces seem to work quite effectively, and most races have excellent slipstreaming battles.

The consensus was they would be at least 20 seconds per lap slower or so, IIRC.
The really beautiful thing about the original FF regs was the caveat โ€œif it doesnโ€™t say that you can do it, then you cannot do itโ€ that phrase saves several hundred pages of regulations!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

That is the overarching SCCA rule. It makes techโ€™s job a lot easier.

Are Mercedes now worried about Singapore (another track where they have experienced tyre management issues in the past)?

Then again they lack in height and significantly in offroad capabilities ..

Completely different track layout, surface, warmer temperatures and you can actually overtake around that track, they're more excited to see that Flexi Wing removed from the Red Bull which is worth a lot of lap time.
