Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

we're screwed...
This whole area looks like it does not belong there... lets see if they just experiment with something in free practise, or if they use it in qualifying and race. i remember an interview with ross brawn after the first barcelona test where he said how happy they were with the car performing just as they expected without any cooling issues.

i'm sure it does not mean a bad thing at all.
Plus, look at the body pannel around the exhaust. It looks like they had planned different versions of this from the start.

That is without a doubt the shadow of the top plane winglet, that is opened.
You're just plain wrong - look at the shape of the small plate on the end of the DRS flap that when closed will rotate down to cover that hole. It's clear as day that it's not a shadow.
What? Can you see that when it comes down, on the closed position, it will not cover the shadow at all? It´s not even the right shape, I have no idea how you can doubt it´s a shadow.

I'm going to agree with rikhart here. It looks like a shadow to me.

I find it hilarious so many people are adamant on whether it's the hole or the shadow, "I'm sure", "You're just plain wrong", etc.!

Really? 100% sure? Wow. I hope you are not engineers.

I remember some people on this thread talking about 2 pipes exiting the engine cover just above the gearbox.. so now the mystery is finally uncovered..but F-Duct or no F-Duct nothing can substitute pure aero performance..

Those were unrelated.

Anyway can anyone spot any holes for air flow in here?

these gills look like:
what can be done if we get into temperature issues due to ambient temps?
lets open the exits a bit ...could well be they found a component critical condition when wading through the data or during inspection of the parts after testing.
at the start of the season you play it as safe as you can..finish is what counts.

then those pipes could possibly be blowing the diffuser..it is a bit disappointing looking at those gills again.. they were having overheating problems last year but not expected the same this year... maybe they are not concentrating on the air flowing around the sidepods but more above them as they have the lowest ones of all the teams this year... just a possibility....

They were just exit pipes for the gearbox radiator. They wont have any effect on the diffuser unfortunately.

Those gills have nothing to do with overheating, IMHO.

This confirms that there is no ducting to the front wing. Any such ducting would need to be absolutely air tight! Not to mention quickly disconnecting for in race changes. I see no such fittings on the bulkhead so can we all confirm that there is no Ducting to the front wing from the rear wing? (doesn't rule out FW F-duct though).
