Red Bull RB8 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Seems like an odd choice for Red Bull as won't the long chord rear wing have a lesser DRS effect, even if it does produce more downforce the rest of the time. I'd expect this to hurt their quali performance, where they are already lacking, and make it harder to overtake.

I guess the saving grace will be that they will have an easier choice with gearing the car which may translate to slightly faster free air race pace.

I suspect teams are just laying the groundwork to implement Daffy Ducts now that they've thrice been declared legal.

That's's an interesting point bhall's making. The daffy duct basically increases the DRS effect, so maybe they're going for better DRS-closed pace while sacrificing DRS effect, using the daffy duct (or planning to) to offset said lack of drs effect.

What I find interesting is that they've changed the concept to a more angular shape. The main plane is much flatter, the flap much more angled. Previously they were both almost the same angle on the), dating back since the 09 rule changes.

The narrow original solution on Vettel's car seems to be working a lot better than the McLaren copy on Webber's. Webber was seen in intense discussions with Newey in second practise.

It's obvious they have to make a choice as they can't develop 2 different cars ...

Vettel's race pace in FP2 is actually 6 tenths behind Button

Did they do any constant speed runs? I'm wondering if their back to back comparative analysis will be something qualitative or quantitative.

Looks like they're very interested in the air flow around & through the bridge.

Crucial - you posted the same picture twice?

The exhaust seems to have changed again. It's squared off like the Melbourne version; but seems different to the Melbourne version nonetheless.

Anyhoo - Vettel's spec:

I think those flow vis pics are before a run - anyone have the after pics showing the flow visit?

Also, are those inters? the tyres seem to have a pattern...

I posted the top picture first because I was trying to make a point about the flo-vis and air flow. Then I saw diesels post and tried to kill two birds with one stone. Sorry.

Here's better look at Sebs exhaust today

The camera were previously mounted as a part of the tip of the nose, and the nose seemed designed around this.

However, today the cameras were mounted down by the front wing central section, to interact with it and counteract the lift it produces.

Are Red Bull boosting front end downforce in order to counteract low downforce at the rear?

I also expect a new nose design soon if this is the case.
