Max Verstappen won the Monaco Grand Prix of 2021, making most of the opportunity after the pole sitter and Bottas, his closest challenger, retired from the race. Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris completed a very young podium at the principality.
Good weekend:
- "we win and we lose together"
- no blame culture
- great team, so grateful
Bad weekend:
- poor, very poor performance from the team
- radio silence after the race
- no learnings for me personally but for the team definitely
Talk is cheap. Take a page out of George Russell's book from Bahrain 2020 on how to "graciously" handle a complete Merc cock-up.
Not many bad weekends when you have 98 wins is it?!
Mathematically those bad days are not of a quantity to be of any significance, and thus your claim would be considered nebulous.
Exactly. This is just proving the point.
It's easy to be a team player and praise the team all the time when you're winning everything left and right for years unchallenged.
It's the moments of hardship that prove true strength of character. Protecting the team when everything goes wrong.
First sign of pressure in the WDC and all team play goes out the window... Goes to show just how credible that talk is.

You don’t become the statistically GOAT by being happy with failure

No, you certainly don't. You need dominant car for many years to accomplish that
That's formula 1. The greats deserve the best cars. In feudal Japan only the best swords found the best samurai. Imagine a weak Samurai with a great sword? That sword would be snatched from him in no time! This is also why Lewis' long tenure of 9 years in that Mercedes seat, like a king holding his throne, is also a testament to greatness. George, Carlos, Leclerc, Lando and Max can only dream of ever displacing Lewis there. Lewis has to either become senile (in driving terms) or retire from the seat. The team loves him and want him there.

Sometimes the driver makes the car great, sometimes the car makes the driver great.
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

The greatness of Lewis shouldnt be measured by his statistics, the car is too much of an influence. Its the fact he is on top of his game for 9 years now and still is as hungry as ever being in the best seat available, without a serious challenger for most of the time, that should be applauded. No driver will ever replicate that imo.
I think nobody has a problem with Hamilton hating losing. I don’t.
100% agree. I'd hope all 20 drivers have a massive problem with losing (or not maximising their result) or they shouldn't even be in the sport in the first place. You'd hate to see Verstappen or Leclerc in that situation and just shrug their shoulders and be content as well.
I think sadly some just have a problem with Hamilton, regardless of whether he wins or loses.
We also have to understand that having access to all of this is pretty new.
Can you imagine Mansell, Senna, Piquet, etc all mic’ed up like this?
It’s kind of like dash cams, just because we can see it now, doesn’t mean it was any less and possibly more crazy in the past.
They’d be viewed as emotional pricks by many in this thread instead of stoic demigods.
To be honest, a large majority if people will find any reason to hate on Hamilton, or any other driver for that matter. Lewis just has more haters than others because he's the most popular and sometimes, the most polarising.
Anyone here getting even remotely worked up about what he said needs their head checked. He's still a human being at the end of the day and expecting absolute perfection every moment he is in the spotlight is utterly unrealistic.
It's refreshing to see someone come out and just have a go at their team once in a while. Let's me know they are still emotional people and not some PR robot.

This is something I've mentioned before - the illusion of the hero is destroyed by the reality of the spoiled brat broadcast to the world from the radio. True for all current drivers. Tsunoda doesn't even have the excuse of being a great of the sport to back up his foul mouthed outbursts.
By all accounts though Mansell's radio was mostly him singing nursery rhymes to himself

We could open a topic how likeable we think some drivers are? We had many about how good we think they are? It will offcourse trigger a lot of commotion (again) but right now we have all that emotions in the race threads every weekend when things do not go as hoped for your particular favourite(s).
the immediate post-race podium interview with Coulthard was interesting for me in regards to mental battles.
Sainz did a masterclass of psychological warfare on Norris. Not only did he finish P2 in front of Norris, but he also delibaretely crashed his live interview.
He did it in a tongue in cheek manner but Norris' body language showed he was absolutely not enjoying that and became visually annoyed, to which Sainz threw a few extra on him.
Even though it is a bit of 'innocent' banter, imho they were some 'blows' by Carlos to Lando. "for once i'm happy to share for you".
Also, he was giving some tiny little blows to LeClerc too, mentioning how he missed out after a good lap and that it doesnt taste as good as it should.
It took a bit imho for Carlos to start getting up to speed, but it is undeniable that -had he finished the lap without errors- he would definately have beaten LeClerc's pole time,
so Carlos would have started from P1 and as such could have finished P1 ahead of Max. Also how the responsibility was on him with Charles not in the grid,
and not even sweating "no man, it's easy" i lold hard.
Sainz really threw some Alonso-style psychological warfare blows out there and assert some dominance. Good on him, glad to see him getting in the game.
Very curious for Azerbadijan.
I think Ferrari might be strong there too.
