Darren Turner starts racing simulator business

Darren Turner has unveiled his new company, 'Base Performance'. The double Le Mans winner aims to use his expertise to create and develop racing simulators, especially aimed at Formula One drivers and upcoming talent.

The new organisation offers specialist support to improve the development speed, accuracy and value of ‘driver-in-the-loop’ simulators. With 'extensive experience' of Formula 1 simulators and road and race car development, Base Performance will allow race teams and vehicle manufacturers to quickly develop and optimise simulators into workable tools, in order to achieve better results.

“Testing and cost restrictions are pushing engineers to increasingly rely on simulators to develop and improve vehicles and drivers,” says founder Darren Turner. “However, we see teams spending months and sometimes years transforming their simulator technology into a fully usable and dependable package, and this leads to increased costs and a lack of performance transferred to the track or road. What we offer is a blueprint to quickly develop and optimise simulators into workable tools, and to achieve better results; a confidential consultancy service designed to slash development time and increase efficiency.”

Base Performance provides drivers who are trained in interacting with and advancing a simulator. Despite significant advances in simulator technology, the ability to work in an environment that contrasts greatly to the track and compensates for the dynamic shortfalls requires specialist experience and knowledge.

The breadth of driver experience at Base Performance will see the firm provide further services, notably to the road car and tuning industry. “We have expertise in developing high performance road cars,” adds Turner. “We are able to drive, assess and provide feedback at the limit of a vehicle’s capability, whilst performing consistent or repeatable drive cycles.”

To provide objective assessment, Base Performance’s driver engineers are able to interpret and understand logging data from the leading providers.

In addition, the firm aims to support younger drivers through driver development and coaching programmes. “We go beyond traditional driver mentoring programmes,” says Turner. “Even quick drivers may lack the ability to set up a car or get the most from a simulator. With much more emphasis on this as a development and evaluation tool, learning how to use one is essential part of the modern, professional driver.”
