Rosberg tops first practice as Massa crashes Williams

Nico Rosberg easily topped the first practice session at Silverstone, edging out team mate Lewis Hamilton by a comfortable 7 tenths. Fernando Alonso went third fastest, just a tenth shy of Hamilton.

Daniel Ricciardo was the fastest Renault powered runner, posting the 4th best time of the morning, 1.2s down on the fastest Mercedes.

Most attention however went to Felipe Massa as he heavily crashed his Williams FW36 on the exit of Stowe. He spun into the opposite wall and did considerably damage to his car. The Brazilian though was left unhurt, but it's a disappointing beginning of the weekend ahead of his 200th race start.

Just minutes before, Susie Wolff went fastest in the opening stages of the session before coming to a halt with a drop of oil pressure. It was immediately the end of her session, having completed just one timed lap.

Other FP1-only drivers included Daniel Juncadella in the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg. He went 14th fastest, positioning himself ahead of Giedo van der Garde who ran the session in Adrian Sutil's Sauber. Robin Frijns was also in action, taking the wheel of Kamui Kobayashi's Caterham, although only for a short while as the team investigated problems. The same was true, once again, for Pastor Maldonado as he failed to set a time following an early issue on his Lotus E22.
