FP1: Mercedes comfortably ahead of Racing Point in Hungary

By on

While both Mercedes AMG F1 drivers were closely matched at the Hungaroring, they had no problem holding off the competition. The pink cars of Racing Point were third and fourth, half a second down on the pace setters.

Daniel Ricciardo, fifth faster for Renault was already more than a full second slower than Lewis Hamilton, who set his fastest time on the hardest tyre - contrary to Bottas who used the medium compound. The Ferraris were next in the order, and interestingly faster than either Red Bull and McLaren.

Just out of the top 10 is Carlos Sainz, ending up just 0.060s slower than Renault's Esteban Ocon.
Reserve driver Robert Kubica returned to the track for Alfa Romeo – in place of Kimi Raikkonen – to finish the session 3.147s off the pace after an early spin, while Antonio Giovinazzi was 17th.

AlphaTauri’s Daniil Kvyat finished 16th while Pierre Gasly had a Honda power unit issue and did not complete a lap in this session, which could set him back as rain is forecast to hit the circuit for FP2 this afternoon.
