Russell heads Mercedes one-two in Montreal sprint qualifying

George Russell secured pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix Sprint after delivering a composed and decisive performance in Sprint Qualifying, leading a dominant Mercedes front‑row lockout ahead of his team mate Kimi Antonelli.
The Briton had already signalled his intent by topping SQ2, and he carried that momentum into the final phase. His opening lap in SQ3 was strong enough for provisional pole, but he improved further on his final attempt, setting a benchmark time of 1:12.965 that none of his rivals could match.
Antonelli came closest, finishing just 0.068 seconds behind, which underlined both his growing confidence and Mercedes’ competitive form in Montreal.
McLaren emerged as the nearest challenger, with Lando Norris taking third place, three tenths off Russell’s pole time, while Oscar Piastri followed closely in fourth.
Ferrari locked out the third row, with Lewis Hamilton ahead of Charles Leclerc after both drivers showed flashes of promising pace earlier in the session.
Max Verstappen could do no better than seventh in the Red Bull, and he was followed by his team mate Isack Hadjar in eighth. Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad and Williams’ Carlos Sainz completed the SQ3 order.
The session had already been shaped by drama in SQ1, where Fernando Alonso brought out the red flags after hitting the barriers. Although the Aston Martin driver progressed to SQ2, the damage prevented him from taking part, leaving him to start the Sprint from sixteenth.
When the session resumed with less than two minutes remaining, the field faced a frantic dash to the line, and most drivers failed to begin a final timed lap before the chequered flag.
This left several notable names stranded in the lower positions, including Sergio Pérez in seventeenth, Lance Stroll in eighteenth, Pierre Gasly in nineteenth and Valtteri Bottas in twentieth.
Two drivers were unable to participate at all. Alex Albon’s Williams remained too damaged to run after his collision with a groundhog during Free Practice 1, while Liam Lawson’s Racing Bulls entry was sidelined by a hydraulic leak discovered during Friday practice.
