Mercedes "can't afford to continue suffering from these reliability issues," claims Wolff

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff described the British Grand Prix as a "dramatic race" after George Russell recovered to secure his maiden home podium, while Kimi Antonelli saw a potential victory disappear following a technical failure at Silverstone.

It was a race of contrasting fortunes for the Mercedes drivers. Antonelli started from pole position but lost the lead to Charles Leclerc off the line, dropping behind both Ferraris in the opening stages.

"The Italian quickly recovered, overtaking Lewis Hamilton during the first stint before Mercedes elected to extend his opening run, giving him a significant tyre-life advantage over Leclerc for the closing stages.

The strategy appeared set to pay dividends. Antonelli rapidly closed the gap to the Ferrari and looked capable of challenging for victory before damage to his front wheel shield forced him into an unscheduled pit stop. Although Mercedes managed to repair the issue, he was forced to stop again as he struggled to keep the car on the circuit.

The additional pit stops dropped Antonelli to 10th, and while he fought hard to salvage a point, a five-second penalty for repeatedly leaving the track during the incident, combined with the race finishing behind the Safety Car, ultimately dropped him out of the points.

Russell's afternoon was scarcely less dramatic. Locked in a fierce battle with Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton for the final podium position, the Briton suffered a slow puncture while running fourth, forcing an extra pit stop that relegated him to sixth.

However, Antonelli's retirement from contention, Verstappen's late spin into the gravel and Ferrari's decision to pit Hamilton under the Safety Car elevated Russell back to second place. With the race ending behind the Safety Car, he was able to secure the first Silverstone podium of his Formula 1 career.

Reflecting on the race, Wolff praised Russell's resilience after what had initially looked like a disappointing afternoon.

"That was a dramatic race," he said. "We are super happy for George as he has not quite gelled with the car as he would have liked this weekend."

"He has shown great resilience though, kept working hard and even after the puncture that took him out of the fight for P3, battled back," noted Wolff.

Wolff also admitted Mercedes was relieved that the Safety Car remained on track until the chequered flag, preventing Hamilton from attacking Russell on his fresh tyres.

"We were hopeful that the Safety Car would stay out at the end as we had Lewis (Hamilton) right behind on fresh tyres and so it proved; a first home podium here at Silverstone is a well-deserved result."

The Mercedes boss was equally quick to sympathise with Antonelli, whose race had promised so much before reliability intervened.

"On the other side, it was an unfortunate race for Kimi. He showed great pace and would have been a strong contender for victory before the wheel shield failure."

Mercedes initially struggled to diagnose the exact nature of the damage before realising the extent of the problem: "We weren't 100% clear what the damage was and once we worked it out, we thought that was his race done."

Despite the setback, Wolff praised the young Italian for keeping the car on track and battling to what initially appeared to be a points finish.

"He did well to maintain P10 on track but the Safety Car, as he still had to serve a five-second time penalty, went against him."

Looking ahead, Wolff acknowledged that while Mercedes remains in a strong championship position, the team must eliminate the reliability problems that have affected recent races.

"We will now reset and recalibrate before heading to Spa and Hungary for the final double header before the summer break," continued the Austrian.

"We are in a strong position in both championships but know we can't afford to continue suffering from these reliability issues. That is something that all of us are working hard to get on top of and improve."
