EXPLAINED: Why did Pirelli bring its softest compounds to the Hungaroring?

Pirelli has nominated its three softest compounds for this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, with the C3, C4 and C5 tyres expected to face one of their toughest examinations of the season in the intense summer heat at the Hungaroring.
The Budapest event marks the final race before Formula 1's summer break and returns to a circuit that has undergone extensive modernisation over the past two years.
While the paddock and hospitality facilities have been comprehensively redeveloped, further track work has also taken place ahead of this year's race, with Turns 1 and 12 resurfaced following last season's resurfacing of the pit lane and starting grid.
At 4.381 kilometres, the Hungaroring is one of the shortest and slowest circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. Its 14-corner layout is frequently compared to a kart track, with a relentless sequence of low- and medium-speed bends allowing drivers very little opportunity to rest.
The circuit features just one significant straight—the start-finish straight—which also provides the best overtaking opportunity before another technical lap begins.
Because of its twisty nature, teams typically adopt aerodynamic setups similar to those used at the Monaco Grand Prix, prioritising maximum downforce, traction and braking stability over outright straight-line speed.
These characteristics make Pirelli's softest tyre allocation the logical choice. The C3, C4 and C5 compounds are well suited to a circuit where mechanical grip and traction out of slow corners are critical. However, the Hungaroring also presents several unique tyre challenges.
Much of the asphalt remains relatively old and coarse despite the recent resurfacing work, creating one of the roughest track surfaces of the season. Combined with naturally low grip levels on Friday, the circuit usually experiences significant track evolution as more rubber is laid down throughout the weekend.
Ambient and track temperatures are also expected to rank among the highest seen all season, placing the tyres under considerable thermal stress. Rear tyre degradation is likely to be the primary limiting factor due to the repeated traction zones, while the softer compounds may also be susceptible to graining if they are pushed too aggressively.
As a result, tyre management is expected to play a decisive role throughout Sunday's race.
From a strategic perspective, both one-stop and two-stop races remain realistic possibilities, with degradation levels likely to determine which approach proves fastest. The relatively small performance difference between the two strategies means teams will also have to consider track position carefully, particularly given how notoriously difficult overtaking is at the Hungaroring.
Should temperatures remain exceptionally high throughout the weekend, teams are expected to favour the harder race compounds, with the C3 and C4 likely to carry the majority of the race distance.
Once the Hungarian Grand Prix concludes, Pirelli's work in Budapest will continue. Aston Martin, Audi and Alpine will remain at the Hungaroring for two days of tyre testing on Tuesday and Wednesday, helping the Italian manufacturer continue the development of its tyres for the 2027 Formula 1 season.
