Hamilton handed hefty penalty after his incident with Piastri

Having delivered an excellent performance to qualify second for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has been hit with a three-place penalty for having impeded McLaren racer Oscar Piastri.

Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix from fifth on the grid after being handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri during qualifying at the Hungaroring.

The Ferrari driver had produced one of his strongest qualifying performances of the season, initially securing second place on the grid behind McLaren's Lando Norris.

However, the result was overturned after the FIA stewards ruled that Hamilton had unnecessarily impeded Piastri during the closing stages of Q3.

The incident occurred on the approach to Turn 1, where Hamilton was travelling slowly on the racing line after completing his flying lap just as Piastri arrived on a push lap.

Piastri was forced to take avoiding action by running wide, abandoning what could have been a pole-challenging lap.

Speaking after qualifying, Hamilton insisted he was unaware that the McLaren driver was approaching until it was too late.

"Yeah, I was told literally when he was at the apex behind me," Hamilton told The Race. "So I had no idea he was coming.

"I thought everyone came out behind me, I was the first out, so I thought everyone had finished their lap.

"I think Charles was the car that was behind me when I left the pitlane, as far as I was aware. So, crazy, because it had been clean and obviously it wasn't intentional."

Despite Hamilton's explanation, the stewards concluded that Ferrari had failed to ensure its driver was aware of the approaching McLaren, while Hamilton's positioning left Piastri with no option but to abandon his lap.

In their verdict, the stewards stated that Hamilton "was travelling at a significantly reduced speed on the racing line" while Piastri approached at full speed on a push lap.

They noted that Hamilton had only received the team's warning "when the latter was already in close proximity" and accepted his explanation that Piastri was not visible in his mirrors due to the positioning of the cars.

However, the FIA determined that Car 44 had "unnecessarily impeded Car 81 during qualifying" and applied the standard penalty for such an infringement: a three-place grid drop.
