Red Bull RB8 Renault

Is it possible that the exhaust gases are drawn into the tunnel? Would that help keep them more concentrated?

How would the exhaust jump over the sidepod wall and into that tunnel though? It seems to me like that would be a weird path for it to take :?

It's also entirely pointless – because they can just aim it there directly. The only reason to do something complex like this would be to send the exhaust somewhere you couldn't get it otherwise... i.e. not to the top of the diffuser.

This is why I'm convinced that it's aimed at the slot down beside the wheel.

More so, the timing (just as McLaren showed their car) of the development says that they're trying to do the same thing as McLaren.

Yeah, it is probably a bit too extreme to be realistic. I was just running through the possible uses of the tunnel.

I imagine that it does cause a little suction, which helps draw the exhaust plume down towards it, possibly to take a path similar to the original drawing.

Well you can't aim it there directly. The exhausts have to point up, right?

Sure – and they previously pointed up... just under the suspension, where it went straight to the beam wing, with much more energy. Why would they do something way way way more complex to get the exhaust gas to the exact same place as they were already aiming it?

Could someone explain the benefit of the tunnel as from a non-aerodynamicist view it appears to add a lot of drag compared to the McLaren system.

Why not just do without the tunnel arrangement and free up that area of even more bodywork?

If they went through the tunnel they would exit over the diffuser gurney rather than the beam wing.

Dont know if you have talked about this as i coudnt find mentioning of this earlier in this thread.

But the RB8 features a dobble layer diffuser. And with the new exhaust there seems to be a tunnel from the sidepod into the floor.

My guess is that they are channeling hot air from the sidepods into the dual layer diffuser. Thats pretty clever.

Do you have some sort of pic/diagram to tell us what you're talking about?

Not right now. I could try to make one when i come home. But on the updated RB8 there is an extension on the sidepod that connects to the floor. I believe there is a tunnel inside this. If you look some pages back in this thread there is some talk about the diffuser being double layered.

Im pretty sure they are feeding this layer with hot air from the sidepods.

Too many questions about things already covered.

So fire up that flux capacitor, and go back for a look.

Aha - you mean a hollow floor; somehow fed via the sidepods? Which Paddy Lowe did describe a while back as the octopus exhaust

I think there must be a slot somewhere under the beam wing, but I haven't found a good picture of that area yet.

Could they also use a smal amount of the exhaust flow trough that "channel"?
Thank you really doesn't really describe enough what I feel. - Vettel

Has nothing to do with what mclaren attempted with what you call the "octopus exhaust". It was basically exactly the same as RB, but started from under the floor. That´s it. It had nothing to do with air from sidepods.

Yes. If you look at the pictures taken from the rear of the car you can see that the diffuser has 2 layers. So the last part of the floor is hollow if you wish.

Look at the picture on last page. You can see the tunnel that extends from the sidepod and into the floor. Im sure it extends into the roof of the hollow part feeding the diffuser edge all way around with hot air from the sidepods.
