Ferrari 150° Italia

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

You mean on the RW endplate? Same stuff that McLaren has and Toyota had few years ago.

I think he may have been referring to the slots I have highlighted...

And if he wasn't then I am...what are those for?

Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Could they be there to draw more air underneath the floor?

you don´t want to draw air under the floor from the sides, don´t you?
Could it be they create a seal by having that slot?
On what grounds a slot in the flat bottom is allowed? i can imagine it´s treated like the cutout Mclaren had sometime in 2009 ? so the slot effectively is a cutout with the profile only attached to the floor at the front (or at the rear)?
but with this argumaentation you could have a start to a double deck diffussser sort off....as long as there is no bodywork visible looking straight up ...

Those slots are in the outer 50mm of the floor. Many teams take advantage of this in front of the rear wheels. We often see these kinds of holes, but ferrari just have them near the front.
There is a regulation that only accounts for 650mm from center line, but the floor is allowed to go as far as 700mm. So 50mm radii or slots can be placed in that region.

When looking from underneath the car you cant see through so it's all legal in that respect as well.

Could the slots be vortex generators to improve the sealing of the floor?

That is what I think too.

Looking at the Ferrari diffuser, the trinagular strakes are sorta far away from the diffuser throat. I don't know if the vortices that are generated reach the diffuser as they do on a redBull.

You can see where the heat impinges on the metal.

in every car thread you talk about the triangular vortex generators on the diffusor like they're the most important part on the car. I think they obviously have an effect to earn their place on the car, but I don't think they are very important in comparison to your apparent opinion.

This paper would answer your question about importance of vertical splitters IF we could get our hands on it. I can only find the abstract.
