Red Bull RB9 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

"...and there, very much in flames, is Jacques Laffite's Ligier. That's obviously a turbo blaze, and of course, Laffite will be able to see that conflagration in his mirrors... he is coolly parking the car somewhere safe." Murray Walker, San Marino 1985

Out of all those Jerez pictures, I kept scrolling for a look at the diffuser. When I saw it I laughed. I'm thinking Red Bull is still holding their cards.

Point being that I was looking at all the pictures like a hawk trying to find the diffuser shot, and when I saw it the simplicity of it made me laugh. Not saying that simple can't be fast. It just wasn't what I expected.

Perhaps they bolted on something simple to evaluate its drag reduction system.

Diffusers are relatively simple these days, dont expect anything other than detail changes.

Another season begins!

Stuff I am seeing ..
Fantasic job of sidepod blending, from the front splitter to the sides .. McLaren also worked on this pretty hard.

Only one other car on the grid, that I see (Lotus), has gone with the tunnels .. curious to me.

Very compact sidepod widths, much like Sauber. Should give a nice drag reduction and easier flow control for tunnels

Curious indent or hump, depending on point of view on the engine cover towards the coanda exhaust outlet .. looks like a packaging detail but could this less than smooth transition from the driver's area back really be used to influence airflow energy around the exhaust exit?

Now that the beam wing has no center support I'm surprised they have such a pronounced center hump. I bet that gets knocked down quite a bit.

Lastly, OMG that is a TON of caster in the front suspension .. no problems heating up the fronts this year!

BTW, a big thanks to Stefan for the great high res pics!!!!!

Look at the lateral shaping of the rear wing endplates. Something mysterious going on in these.

Nice little article on exhausts over at checkeredflag ..

Notice here that you can clearly see the exhaust flow heat pattern of the RB9 and how it seems to perfectly lineup with the floor dam. Not a high res pic but nice angle ..
