That was my original thought, but I thought that a regulation change was made around Melbourne 2010 which prevented teams from running "unusually shaped" starter motor holes. Surely the starter motor hol eis also in the central 15cms?

IIRC Ferrari didn't even use the starter hole last year as they had a different mechanism to fire up the engine. And I agree with 42, I thought they clarified that rule and only a circular shape could be used.

The central 15cm section rule is not valid for the diffusor. No opening in the floor in this area is allowed except the starter hole. That must not have an area greater than 3500mm2, but the form is somewhat free.
I think they used the trick with the slits above the exhaust from last year. We have to search for a little slit that connect the holes. Maybe they cut it not until next tests or Bahrain.

The FIA wanted to abandon too big and unusual starter holes with the new rules. Interesting to see what they say about the Ferrari solution.
FIA Technical Regulations Article 3.12.7:
No bodywork which is visible from beneath the car and which lies between the rear wheel centre line and a
point 350mm rearward of it may be more than 125mm above the reference plane. With the exception of the
aperture described below, any intersection of the surfaces in this area with a lateral or longitudinal vertical
plane should form one continuous line which is visible from beneath the car.
An aperture for the purpose of allowing access for the device referred to in Article 5.16 is permitted in this
surface. However, no such aperture may have an area greater than 3500mm2 when projected onto the
surface itself and no point on the aperture may be more than 100mm from any other point on the aperture.
Additionally, any bodywork in this area must produce uniform, solid, hard, continuous, rigid (no degree of
freedom in relation to the body/chassis unit), impervious surfaces under all circumstances).

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum, have been reading here for a while now but never contributed because I'm not exactly an expert on the detail design of F1 cars...

I have a question though, does anyone have an idea what the working principle of the two vertical plates below the nosecone is?

Image

I think it first appeared on the F10 at some point during 2010 but I didn't find much discussion about it on this forum. My guess would be it acts as some sort of splitter. Both plates deflect outwards so I would say they lead air away from the centre of the car towards some area where high pressure is desired for the diffuser. But wouldn't this generate a relatively large wake and corresponding drag?

I believe they act as guiding vanes/splitter to deflect away any turbulent air generated by the front wing support pillars, away from the central section of the car..

Look at the way the flow vis is angled coming off the beam wing.

Here is an animated png comparing the RB7 to the F150. You must have a browser that supports animated pngs. It takes a while to load:

That is insane!! Look how tight the rear of the RB7 is compared to the F150!! The bull's arse is a lot tighter than the stallion's chunky butt

So how does one do anything with the .png file? Just shows a Ferrari here...

Open it in firefox (at least it works in the latest FF4 beta) or chrome.

Here's a list of applications that supports this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APNG#Application_support
