F1MATHS: The numbers behind Albon's record-breaking F1 weekends

The 2026 Formula One season has become a landmark chapter in the modern history of Williams, and at its centre stands Alex Albon — the Thai driver is set to complete his 100th Williams at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

For a team preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027, Albon’s achievements arrive at a symbolic moment. What began as a rebuilding project in 2022 has evolved into a long‑term partnership that now places the Thai‑British driver in the same statistical and cultural space as Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Alain Prost and Jacques Villeneuve.

Matching Mansell

The first milestone arrived at the Monaco Grand Prix, where Albon made his 95th start for Williams, drawing level with 1992 World Champion Nigel Mansell as the driver with the most race appearances for the team. Fittingly, Albon delivered a strong performance on the streets of Monte Carlo, climbing from P11 to finish eighth, adding four valuable points to his season tally.

Matching Mansell — one of the most revered figures in Williams history — was a moment Albon described with emotion: “It is incredible to think that I've raced for this historic team more often than one of the true greats of the sport. Nigel Mansell was an inspiration to me growing up, a true fighter and a legend for both Williams and Formula 1 as a whole.”

Albon emphasised that the milestone reflects the collective effort of the entire organisation: “This achievement is about far more than the number itself. Every Grand Prix start over the last five seasons represents the hard work of the entire team at Grove.

"Through the highs and lows, every race has contributed to the journey Williams has been on. To have my name alongside legendary Williams drivers such as Nigel, Damon Hill, and Ralf Schumacher is a real privilege and a source of immense pride.”

Barcelona: Race 96 — A new Williams record

At the Barcelona‑Catalunya Grand Prix, Albon steps into his 96th race start for Williams, surpassing Mansell and becoming the team’s all‑time appearance leader. To commemorate the moment, he will race with a special‑edition helmet — a modern recreation of Mansell’s iconic 1992 championship‑winning design.

Team Principal James Vowles praised Albon’s contribution and the significance of the record: “Records like this don't happen by accident — they're the result of years of hard work, trust, and belief on both sides.

"I am immensely proud of Alex and everything he has achieved with this team. He has earned his place in Williams history, and we're proud to celebrate these milestones together.”

Hungary: Race 100 — A century with Williams

The next major milestone arrives at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Albon will become only the 29th driver in Formula One history to reach 100 starts with a single constructor. It is a rare achievement that underscores the stability and mutual commitment that have defined his five‑year tenure at Grove.

For Williams, a team that has endured both glory and hardship, Albon’s century represents a new chapter in its long‑term resurgence. Since joining in 2022, he has scored 121 points, delivered multiple top‑five finishes and played a central role in the team’s technical and cultural rebuild.

1992 World Champion Nigel Mansell — the man whose record Albon has now surpassed — offered warm praise for the driver carrying forward the Williams legacy.

“I'm so pleased to see Alex reach this milestone — it's a really special achievement and one he thoroughly deserves. The commitment he has shown to Williams over these past five seasons says everything about him as a driver and as a person.”

Mansell also expressed confidence in the team’s trajectory: “And it's not just Alex — the whole team is moving in the right direction, and that's brilliant to see. I have no doubt he'll go on to make many, many more appearances in Williams colours. As for my wins record — I wouldn't rule anything out.”
