Newey explains his unique Aston Martin leadership role and opens up on recent health battle

Adrian Newey has shed light on his unique position at Aston Martin, explaining how his responsibilities as Team Principal differ from the traditional role while also revealing he has recently recovered from a difficult period of ill health.
Since joining the Silverstone-based outfit, Newey has taken on multiple responsibilities, serving as Team Principal, Technical Chief and co-owner as Aston Martin looks to establish itself as a Formula 1 front-runner.
However, rather than overseeing every aspect of the team's race weekend operations, the legendary designer has structured the role to allow him to focus on engineering and the long-term direction of the organisation.
Newey explained that, in his view, the title of Team Principal is defined less by public appearances and more by ultimate responsibility for the team's strategic decisions.
"'Team Principal' is, in part, a formal requirement – under FIA regulations, you have to nominate someone in that role. It's a job title, not a job description.
"The way we interpret it is that, when it comes to key strategic decisions, the buck stops with me. That's the heart of the job. Of course, [Executive Chairman] Lawrence is also deeply involved in those big calls too."
While Newey carries responsibility for Aston Martin's strategic direction, he revealed that day-to-day trackside leadership and media duties are handled by Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack, allowing the former Red Bull technical mastermind to remain focused on engineering development back at the team's headquarters.
"At the track, in terms of representing the team publicly and dealing with the media, that's very much Mike's role. He's extremely good at it.
"That structure allows me to focus my time where I can add the most value – working with the team in Silverstone on the engineering, long-term strategy and overall direction – while Mike leads the weekend-to-weekend track responsibilities."
The arrangement reflects Aston Martin's wider philosophy of dividing responsibilities between specialists as the team continues to expand both on and off the circuit.
Newey also disclosed that he has overcome a difficult spell with his health, admitting he was unable to operate at full capacity throughout much of last year. Despite that, he praised the Aston Martin engineering group for maintaining momentum during his reduced day-to-day involvement.
"I'm OK now, but it's been a difficult period. As I said earlier, it never rains but it pours. In truth, I was not 100 per cent last year. I had to balance health and work much more carefully.
"The team handled it incredibly well. I kept a very good relationship with the engineers and I don't feel it caused too much of a blip. That's a testament to how adaptable and supportive everyone here is."
