Audi secures consecutive Q3 appearances as Hülkenberg targets points in Hungary

Audi continued its encouraging progress in Formula 1 qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with Nico Hülkenberg reaching Q3 and securing 10th place on the grid, marking another important milestone for the emerging team.

The German squad had shown strong pace throughout the weekend and was involved in a close battle with Racing Bulls for the final places inside the top 10. In the end, Hülkenberg was the driver who came out on top of that midfield fight, progressing through to the final qualifying segment despite having only one fresh set of Soft tyres available.

However, with limited tyre resources, Hülkenberg was unable to challenge Arvid Lindblad ahead and settled for P10. Nevertheless, he believes Audi maximised its potential during a difficult qualifying session affected by changing wind conditions.

"I'm pleased to be back in Q3 after a clean qualifying," Hülkenberg said. "I think we maximised everything we had today. That's satisfying, even if the gap to the cars ahead was a bit bigger than we'd hoped."

The veteran driver highlighted the challenging conditions at the Hungaroring, where changing winds made it difficult to find consistency, particularly through the technical middle sector.

"It's been very close all weekend and the windy conditions made it difficult to find consistency, especially through the middle sector."

Despite that challenge, Hülkenberg was pleased with Audi's execution when it mattered most and believes the team's encouraging long-run pace from Friday could allow him to fight for points on Sunday.

"Still, we executed well when it counted and starting from P10 gives us a solid platform for tomorrow," he added. "Our long-run pace looked encouraging on Friday, so hopefully we can challenge the cars around us and fight for points."

While Hülkenberg enjoyed a strong session, team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto endured a much more difficult qualifying. The Brazilian lost his opening Q1 lap time due to track limits, putting him under pressure on his final attempt. After recovering into Q2, his first flying lap was compromised by yellow flags caused by Isack Hadjar's spin, leaving him with only one opportunity to set a competitive time.

Bortoleto eventually qualified 14th, admitting that he was unable to extract the full potential of the car.

"It was a disappointing qualifying from my side," Bortoleto said. "I didn't put everything together and made a few mistakes, so I didn't maximize the package we had today."

The rookie believes Audi had the pace to fight closer to the top 10 after showing strong performance throughout the weekend. Although starting 14th makes his race more complicated, Bortoleto remains determined to recover positions on Sunday.

"We've been in the top ten throughout the weekend, so I think there was definitely more potential. Starting from P14 makes tomorrow more challenging, but we'll do our best to move forward and see what we can achieve."

Audi Racing Director Allan McNish praised the team's qualifying performance while recognising the difficult circumstances created by the changing conditions.

"Overall, it was a challenging qualifying session for everyone with the wind and changing track conditions, but we have positives to take away," McNish said.

The result represents another step forward for Audi, with Hülkenberg's Q3 appearance following Gabriel Bortoleto's top-10 qualifying result at Spa.

"Reaching another small milestone on our journey, with consecutive top ten qualifying results for the team following Gabriel in Spa and now Nico here in Budapest, is something we can be pleased with."

McNish was particularly pleased to see Hülkenberg return to form after several difficult weekends.

"Nico has had a run of weekends where things haven't quite fallen his way, so it was great to see him put everything together and deliver a very strong lap today."

However, he acknowledged that Bortoleto faced a much tougher qualifying session due to the sequence of incidents that left him fighting from behind.

"On Gabriel's side, it was a more difficult session, and he was on the back foot for much of qualifying, but starting P10 and P14 gives us opportunities with both cars tomorrow."

With overtaking expected to be difficult at the Hungaroring, Audi knows strategy and race execution will be crucial. McNish believes the unpredictable nature of Sunday's race could create opportunities for both drivers.

"Budapest can be an unpredictable race, and we'll be looking to make the most of what we have."
