Norris reveals he secured Hungaroring pole despite failing to deliver a perfect lap
Lando Norris secured his first pole position of the 2026 Formula 1 season after producing a superb final lap in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, putting McLaren at the front of the grid for Sunday's race.
The Briton had looked competitive throughout Friday's practice sessions and carried that pace into qualifying. After remaining among the frontrunners through every stage of the session, Norris produced a lap of 1:17.207 in the decisive moments of Q3 to edge Lewis Hamilton by the narrowest of margins.
As track conditions evolved around the Hungaroring, Norris was the only driver able to make a significant improvement on his final attempt. He was also aided by avoiding two separate yellow-flag incidents that compromised several of his rivals' laps, allowing the reigning World Champion to secure his maiden Grand Prix pole position of the campaign.
His McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri endured a more frustrating conclusion to qualifying. The Australian had been improving throughout the session but was forced to abandon his final flying lap after encountering Hamilton's slow-moving Ferrari on the racing line.
Piastri sarcastically gave Hamilton a thumbs-up after the incident, and Hamilton was later handed a post-session penalty, promoting the McLaren driver further up the starting order.
For Norris, the result marked a welcome return to the front after a challenging opening half of the season and highlighted the progress McLaren has made with its latest upgrades.
"It's a fantastic feeling to be back on Pole - it's been a while, but I've felt confident all weekend," Norris said.
"The car was performing very well, and the team has done a brilliant job with the new upgrades, we certainly wouldn't be here without them. While my final laps in Q3 weren't perfect, we had the pace when it mattered, and securing Pole is a huge boost for everyone. This result is a testament to the hard work at the factory and the progress we're making."
Despite starting from the best possible position, Norris expects Ferrari to provide a formidable challenge over Sunday's race distance.
"Looking to the race, we're in the best position we've been in all season, but I'm expecting a very tough fight tomorrow," he added.
"The Ferraris have shown incredible pace, and tyre degradation will be a major factor. Starting from the front is obviously an advantage here, but we need a good start and excellent race management.
"Beating them tomorrow will definitely not be easy. We need a few more results like this to feel a bit more confident about our performance, but today is certainly a good start."
