It wasn't an easy race - Fisico

Giancarlo Fisichella was ‘best of the rest’ in Indy yesterday with a strong drive to the podium. The Italian Renault F1 Team driver explains what it took to deliver in sweltering condition at Indianapolis.

Giancarlo, it looked like it was hard work for you out there…

"It wasn’t an easy race! I lost my position to Fernando when I was too cautious under braking for the first corner, but then I could see I was quicker than him. I got a run, came alongside and he didn’t make life difficult for me. That meant I could run at my pace – but I couldn’t get near the Ferraris today."

After that, we heard your engineer on the radio telling you to push in the middle of the race to try and beat Jarno…

"Yes, we were a bit worried about that. Alan [Permane] was on the radio saying “Jarno is coming, he’s quick, he’s on one stop and you need to push or you will lose third.” So I pushed again, but had some traffic at the same time. So I was worried when I made my second stop, but then I kept my pace to the end and maintained the gap."

Alan said you were ‘best of the rest’. Is that how it felt?

"I think third was the best result we could achieve today, so it’s mixed feelings – happy to have done it but disappointed we could not fight for the win. But third is good, we have done the maximum and now we are looking forward to Magny-Cours. That’s a big race for us, and I think we are in good shape."
