Luxury problem for Renault

As Renault didn't receive a penalty from the FIA in the spy investigation, it's more than likely that the French team will sign a two-year contract with Fernando Alonso. In this case, Renault will have a luxury problem as they will have to choose between three top drivers.

At Renault there is only one thing for sure: Fisichella is out of the picture for a 2008 race seat. But when Fernando Alonso decides to move back to Renault, the team will have a luxury problem as they will have 3 top drivers to choose from.

Fernando Alonso became World Champion twice with the French team and Renault hopes to repeat that success in 2008 after a disappointing 2007 season.

Heikki Kovalainen had a difficult start during his rookie season, but only after a few races he was faster than team mate Fisichella. Kovalainen collected his first podium place during the Japenese GP as he became second. If the Finn would have had a better car, he would have been able to make it to the highest scaffold in 2007. Still it seems that Renault would like Kovalainen to move on as they seem keen to place Nelson Piquet Jr. in a race seat in 2008.

Piquet Jr., who was the team's test and reserve driver in 2007, has been publicly applying for the job as race driver for a while now. The youngster seemed keen to learn as much as possible this season to use this knowledge during his first GP.

It is believed that next week, Renault will finally announce their 2008 driver line-up.
