I presume he is just chasing more money, rather than any interests in success.

I don’t think this can be a sensible decision for Fernando. Alpine just wanted Piastri.

There seems to be friction in the team so maybe at his age he just said " ah &*$3. Anything for the easy life, as long as I get to drive'

Or possibly something to do with being released to do the 500?

Congratulations Alpine. You just gave Aston Martin the second or third best driver on the grid.

Alpine - you played yourself.

How on earth AM will mount a title challenge/challenge for podium before Alpine ?
Same was said about Hamilton when he left Mclaren for Mercedes… that turned out ok-ish for him
He left McLaren who was going downward before a big technical overhaul. It was a gamble on the ability of Merc to nail the reg but the team showed some good glimpses in 2012 and Hamilton via Brawn had informations on how promising was the 2014 project.

Alonso is going to a team who is going backward since 2020. A team known for his inability to innovate (Pink Mercedes, Green Red Bull...). The technical overhaul has already took place this year and Aston is on the loser' side.

So it's note a fair comparaison to me.
Alonso is going to get trapped in a McL-Honda 2.0 project. His fans were angry at the nationalist bias of the French team wonder how they will react to the interaction with Stroll.

Sadly, Fernando had to go. Didn't fit in Alpine's plans ever since Otmar arrived.

But let’s be honest: Aston Martin has hired new people, is building new facilities and they are investing heavily in new technology. It’s gonna be a complete different team in 1-2 years and has probably more potential then Alpine will ever have.

Alonso brings exactly what Aston Martin needs. An experienced world champion with a ton of experience and passion. Alonso is pure fire. He brings the passion that Vettel lost in his last two seasons at Ferrari. On top of that Alonso is great for marketing.

Quite possibly it is as much for his contacts and influence as for his ability. Re launching the company needs people brought on board away from the track too.
It may even include some private driver coaching and calibrating the sim  They do not come much more experienced.

“The word in F1 is that there had been a hitch in negotiations between Alpine and Alonso over the length of his contract, with the driver wanting a firm two-year deal and the team preferring an option clause after next season…

The likelihood is that Alonso has signed a two- or three-year deal with options after each year that give him more certainty than he was being offered by Alpine.”
Team ANTI-HYPE. Prove it, then I’ll anoint you.

Piastri's deal has to be the priority. If Alpine cannot find a placement for Piastri, then Alpine have no choice but to put Piastri in the Alpine. :)

Unlike Alonso to which Alpine have no obligation, Piastri is however under contract to Alpine. It is certainly a pressing matter that Piastri's Formula 1 drive at Alpine or elsewhere be announced promptly.

piastri or sargeant are not at the level of Fernando (and will never be even close). ... piastri is a noname driver, Alonso is THE GOAT.

Let's not forget that if [Piastri] has Mich Schumacher debut to F1, the previous F2 Champ, it will cost Alpine millions.

the only guarantee that alpine has with putting Piastri into the alpine next year is that they will be saving money on a salary. which they will most likely lose in endorsements, not having a driver like alonso in the team.
Well it happened! Alonso to Aston Martin Racing on a 2-year-deal and therefore not given a 2-year extension by Alpine F1 Team. [confirmed here: https://www.astonmartinf1.com/en-GB/new ... f1-in-2023 ]

So Piastri is most likely to debut for Alpine F1 Team, unless something bizarre happens. :) Quite the turn of events in Piastri's favour! =D>

Piastri will follow in the footsteps of other Renault & Lotus rookies like Heikki Kovalainen, Nelson Piquet Jr, Romain Grosjean, Vitaly Petrov, Bruno Senna and Joylon Palmer. The idea that Piastri is simply not good enough to drive for Alpine, while all those other rookies were good enough, always made no sense IMO.

You might be right. But I don't believe the project will succeed during Alonso' time.
And even if they are very dominant will Lawrence advantage his son ? I don't want to be a complotist but that's a real question.

There is always the unexpected option of Gasly going to Alpine next year. Two French drivers in a French team has its advantages, especially in gaining sponsorship.
