TECH DEBRIEF: Alpine brought modes upgrades to Spa

Having collected a single point at last Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix, Alpine has brought two modest, circuit-specific upgrades to the challenging, high-speed Spa-Francorchamps circuit. F1Technical's senior writer Balazs Szabo delivers his latest analysis.

The Belgian Grand Prix saw Pierre Gasly climb up through the order to make it to the top 10. Although he looked to struggle for race pace on the dry surface, he managed to keep the chasing cars at bay thanks to his aggressive, low-downforce setup.

In the end, he held onto that last point by just 0.4s while his team-mate Franco Colapinto ended up in a distant 19th place.

Alpine’s upgrades for the Spa-Francorchamps race were modest. The French team brought two circuit-specific upgrades with a focus on a lower-downforce rear wing and beam wing to suit Spa’s layout.

The French outfit upgraded its rear wing for the high-speed Spa-Francorchamps circuit, noting: “The top rear wing has been redesigned and is less loaded.”

The Enstone-based has revealed that this low-downforce rear wing is ”an option for the upcoming tracks," with Las Vegas, Monza and Baku being further potential venues for this configuration.

In addition, the team re-designed the beam wing “to offer an efficient alternative rear wing assembly, suitable for high efficiency tracks.”
