STAT: What do the drivers' standings look like after the Spa race?

By on

With his victories in Austria and Great Britain, McLaren driver Lando Norris closed in on his team-mate Oscar Piastri. However, the Australian increased the eight-point gap again thanks to his triumph at Spa-Francorchamps. F1Technical's senior writer Balazs Szabo explains what the drivers' standings look like ahead of this weekend's Budapest round.

Championship leader Oscar Piastri endured disappointment when he got beaten by his team-mate Lando Norris in last Saturday's Grand Prix qualifying session at Spa.

However, the 24-year-old managed to make up for the defeat on the opening lap of the Belgian Grand Prix. Piastri got a better run than his team mate through the complex of Eau Rouge and Raidillon, allowing him to then make the move on the Kemmel straight.

As drivers switched from intermediates to slick tyres, Piastri enjoyed priority, pitting a lap earlier than Norris which allowed him to build up a margin of over eight seconds.

Although the Briton looked very competitive and comfortable in the closing stages of the 44-lap race on his hard Pirelli tyres, Piastri did not allow to slip the victory through his fingers.

Having taken his sixth victory of the season, Piastri now leads his team-mate Norris by 16 points.

Although he had a shot at defending his title, four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen is slowly losing connection to the fight for the title. The Dutchman is now 81 points adrift of his Melbourne-born rival.

Having grabbed four podium finished in the first six races, George Russell found himself in fourth spot in the drivers’ standings. His early results enabled the Briton to build up a comfortable margin from the rest of the pack, but now he has the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton closely behind him.

Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli is still seventh in the standings, but he failed to score any points in six of the last seven rounds.

There is a fierce battle shaping up for the eleventh place in the drivers’ standings. This position currently belongs to Racing Bulls driver Isack Hajdar, with the Frenchman having collected a total of 22 points so far.

However, Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll, Liam Lawson, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz are in close proximity of Hajdar which will be definetely something to watch out for in the remainder of the season.

The only driver who is yet to score a point is Franco Colapinto. The Argentinean racer finished down in P19 last time out at Spa-Francorchamps, while his team-mate Pierre Gasly scored points in the last two races.
