Mercedes highlights major sustainability achievements from 2025

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team has outlined a series of major sustainability milestones from the 2025 season, reinforcing its ambition to become one of the most sustainable global professional sports teams. The organisation described 2025 as a pivotal year in its long‑term strategy to engineer meaningful change both on and off the racetrack.
Breakthrough in Bio-Based Carbon Fibre TechnologyA landmark achievement came with the debut of a bio‑based carbon fibre composite on the rear brake duct wheel shields of the #63 W16 at the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The component went on to complete more than 7,000 km of racing, contributing to a series of strong results including victory in Singapore, a podium in Las Vegas, and multiple top‑three Sprint finishes in Austin, São Paulo, and Qatar.
The team emphasised that this innovation was only possible through close collaboration with its carbon fibre composites supply chain, demonstrating that sustainable materials can withstand the extreme thermal and mechanical demands of Formula One competition.
Carbon Reduction at Home and Across European LogisticsAt the team’s Brackley headquarters, staff saved 360,000 commuting miles through an internal car‑sharing initiative — equivalent to 99,000 laps of Silverstone.
On the logistics front, Mercedes became the first Formula One team to transport its race cars to a European Grand Prix using fully electric trucks. The all‑electric Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros 600 completed a 673 km journey from Brackley to Zandvoort for the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, following a successful pilot at Silverstone earlier in the year.
The team also expanded the use of HVO100 biofuel across its internal combustion engine truck fleet. This transition avoided more than 410 tCO₂e during the 2025 European season — an environmental benefit comparable to the annual carbon sequestration of approximately 33,600 mature mangrove trees.
Blue Carbon Collective and Global Environmental ImpactMangroves played a central role in the team’s environmental storytelling throughout 2025. In partnership with PETRONAS, Mercedes launched the Blue Carbon Collective, a programme funding mangrove restoration research in Brazil and Malaysia.
The initiative reflects the team’s commitment to protecting ecosystems near several of its race locations — eight current F1 venues lie within 100 km of mangrove forests, including Singapore and São Paulo.
Mangroves also inspired the team’s 2025 Miami Grand Prix merchandise collection, highlighting their importance as one of the planet’s most effective natural carbon sinks.
Supporting Sustainable Motorsport PathwaysCloser to home, Mercedes collaborated with Motorsport UK to co‑fund sustainable fuel for the 2025 IAME Waterswift Restricted Cadet Class within the British Karting Championships. Introduced from Round Three, the fuel delivered a 55% emissions reduction compared to its fossil‑fuel equivalent. The initiative aligns with the team’s long‑standing commitment to supporting young racing talent while promoting cleaner motorsport practices.

Team Representative Bradley Lord expressed pride in the organisation’s progress across environmental and social impact areas. He stated that the team is proud of the progress made in 2025 across the environmental sustainability landscape and within the inclusion and social impact space.
“We are proud of the progress made in 2025 across the environmental sustainability landscape and within the inclusion and social impact space.
"Our actions matter to us, and we know it matters to our fans. We are energised by what is to come in 2026 and determined to keep raising the bar – at home, on track, and in the communities that we live and race in.”
Head of Sustainability Alice Ashpitel highlighted the collective effort behind the year’s achievements.
“As we look to the coming season, it’s rewarding to see the progress that our team made in 2025. Our progress would not have been possible without the contributions of our team members in Brackley and Brixworth, and the support of our partners and suppliers.
"There were many highlights in 2025 but the significance of applying a bio-based carbon fibre composite material to the W16 cannot be underestimated, and we are grateful to all of those involved. We look forward to 2026 as we work to shape a more sustainable future for Formula One.”
