Honda and Toyota to leave F1?

By on

Both Honda and Toyota have threatened to withdraw from Formula 1 because of the FIA's handling of plans to 'freeze' engine development from 2008. The Japanese teams are very unhappy with the plans of the FIA and are not prepared to commit to F1 if the governing body would follow through with their plans.

Honda and Toyota think that the engine freeze scheme is dangerous and that the Formula One would lose its appeal as a technological proving groud.

Nick Fry earlier declared to Autosport: "The message that we and other manufacturers would convey is that while we have submitted entries for the 2008 championship, there are still no guarantees that we will be there. We are not compelled to be in Formula 1. Most car manufacturers do other things, whether it's rallying, DTM or whatever. F1 is important to us, but the world will not come to an end if we stop doing it. People need to understand that."

Toyota, who earlier this month lost its vote in the Formula One Commission, agrees with Honda and threatens to leave F1 if the FIA goes on with its plans.
